Sea Creature Mini Waffle Maker
Sea creature mini waffle maker – how cute are these breakfast treats! I haven’t tried this particular waffle iron, but online reviewers give it high praise. It’s small enough that you could actually take it with you to your condo on the beach.
About the Sea Creature Mini Waffle Maker
The electric Sea Creature Mini Waffle Maker weighs just over 3 pounds and measures 11 x 9 x 5.3 inches. It has a cord wrap and will sit upright for storage.
It cooks 7 fun shapes: starfish, crab, clam, jellyfish, whale, puffer fish, and shark. It will be a hit with kids for breakfast or snacking. Parents like having the option to make their own healthier waffle batter from scratch – no chemicals and preservatives!
Serving these unique little waffles might even become a conversation starter or a teaching moment. Encourage questions and use your phone to find answers you don’t know. You can also find info on the HappyBeachcomber FAQs page. It’s a “work-in-progress” right now, but lots more is coming soon.
The non-stick plates are not removable, but most owners say that the appliance is easy to clean.
The only real issue I see reported is that you have to get the right amount of batter into each shape. Too little and you won’t get the detail on top. Too much and batter will run out the sides, which makes for a messier cleanup. To me that is not a deal breaker because any time you try something new in the kitchen there might be a slight learning curve.

Packaged Pancake/Waffle Mixes
This waffle iron includes 4 recipes you can try (see the owner manual online). Cooking from scratch is always healthier, but I admit that on vacation I would probably opt for a packaged mix. There are plenty of good choices that require no other ingredients except water. My personal favorite is Hungry Jack Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle Mix. Click the link to see it at Walmart. Amazon has it too, but the price is really high.
What I did find on Amazon is Happy Baby Organics Pancake & Waffle Mix. Geared toward young chidlren and toddlers, it’s made with organic ingredients and contains no added sugar. Looks like a great way to give your kids a nutritious breakfast that they’ll have fun eating.
I also have a killer pancake/waffle recipe that was given to me by a friend. If you don’t mind cooking on vacation, then it’s worth a little extra effort. My recipe is below.
My Favorite Pancake/Waffle Recipe
My dear friend Dianne gave me this recipe, and it is absolutely divine. Blueberries are a very nutritious food, but they can be omitted if you don’t like them. See other suggestions below, or experiment to discover the most popular toppings in your household.
Homemade Blueberry Pancakes
[Blueberries Optional]
- Prep Time: 10 min
- Cooking Time: 10 to 15 min
- Total Time: 20-25 min
- Yield: 4 servings
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup all purpose flour
- 2 T granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1 egg, whisked
- 2 T melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 cup blueberries, fresh
- For cooking, 1 additional T butter (best), or oil
DIRECTIONS:
- Mix dry ingredients in large bowl.
- In separate bowl mix egg, buttermilk, vanilla, and the 2 tablespoons of melted butter.
- Make hole in dry ingredients and pour in liquid ingredients.
- Mix, but do not whip or over mix.
- Gently stir in blueberries. Let batter sit for about 10 minutes.
- Heat griddle or waffle iron to medium (butter will burn if your heat is too high).
- Lightly coat griddle or waffle iron with butter, oil, or non-stick spray.
- Use a large spoon to drop batter onto the griddle, or spoon the batter onto your waffle iron.
- For pancakes, flip when they are bubbly on top and golden brown on bottom.
- For waffles, cook until waffles are golden brown.
- Serve with warm syrup, honey, or just more butter.
As mentioned above, you can omit the blueberries if you don’t like them. Otherwise, when trying a recipe for the first time it’s usually best to follow it exactly as written. After that feel free to experiment. (Personally, I omit the cinnamon.)
Other Topping Ideas
When cooking for folks who have a variety of likes and dislikes you can keep the waffles plain and offer toppings on the side. Sliced bananas or any kind of berries would be great. Here in the south we love pecans (especially if they’re toasted), so that would be another delicious option.
Keep in mind that these are very small waffles. For that reason it may make more sense to serve toppings on the side. Give each of the kids a tiny bowl of sugar-free syrup or jam. They will enjoy having their very own dipping sauce, just like the grownups.
While you’re making breakfast more fun for the kids, treat yourself to a great cup of coffee in a beach-themed mug. And finally, when you sit down to eat these cute little sea creature waffles, take time to share stories about your best or most recent trip to the beach. Enjoy!
